Even if (and I'm not saying they can, just "even if") someone could make an argument that the game is only pro-Russian on the surface - but is really trying to create a more subversive message - the cash I'd spend on it is still going to fund people I REALLY don't want my money going to. The message doesn't matter, it's the fact it's Russian developers working for a company financed by Russian oligarch and the sales cause profits for Russian companies. It has a very bioshock vibe in that the main message is very much subverted by the details.

If it funds the war or Russian anything then I'll feel a bit bad about playing it.īut the story is only pro-russia/Soviet on the surface. Mongbiohazard: Herr Flick's Revenge: olorin604: It's on game pass so I've put some decent hours into it. They're either a really bad orc stooge or a huge idiot. Loved one of the Twitter replies to their nonanswer asking why the developer would give the government any of the money they made from the game's sales. Supporting this game is basically paying back the developer's loan from Sberbank and providing the Russian state desperately needed foreign capital. Zbtop: The problem here, like almost everything in Russia, is that everyone at the top of the development house and publisher are neck deep in State connections and the game is deeply connected to State investment interests, because that's basically mandatory to get anywhere and get anything done in Russia. Ultimately I think it's gotten 10x more marketing from the controversy than it ever would have gotten otherwise however. It looks gorgeous, the plot sounds interesting, it's definitely something different, but it's also got some baggage.

Ultimately, it's also a game where the protagonist is a member of the Soviet state security services.

On top of that, the game's marketing in Russia itself has heavily leaned into glorification of the Soviet past in actual real-world marketing events in ways that went beyond parody or game theme and into actual Propaganda territory. The problem here, like almost everything in Russia, is that everyone at the top of the development house and publisher are neck deep in State connections and the game is deeply connected to State investment interests, because that's basically mandatory to get anywhere and get anything done in Russia.
